URBAN GARDEN PROJECT 1.0

MY BACKYARD GARDEN:

My Gardening Tool Table

My Bok Choi Really Loves the Cool Winter Sun...

I got into gardening as a response to the limited healthy options of the commercial food grid.  But I found that gardening is very relaxing & rewarding excercise in patience. My backyard garden is made up of 3 distinct areas: The Full Sun Garden, The Butterfly Garden, The Shade/Winter Garden.

THE PATH

Behind my garge is an enchanting place in space & time

ManKinds ability to transform our enviroment is one of our biggest gifts and curses. It all depends on your world view.  I know that Humanity was better off as hunter gatherers, our first mistake was planting the seed. But the marvels of the micro universe is mesmerizing.

BUTTERFLY GARDENING

My Poor Eaten Up Collard Greens! Oh well Keepin’  it Organic LOL

My Poor Little Collard Greens...I discovered by accident that they are Larval plants. The Monarchs lay their eggs in them. A little sacrafice to keep the Food Chain going 😉

On the side of my is my Shade Garden.  It also double as a ButterFly Sanctuary & Habitat.  I have the Hugest Butterflyies.  They dont even run from me anymore because I am in Harmony w/ them & they know that I am a friend. 🙂 I create an enviroment for them to flourish & procreate along their migration. I am grateful to be a miniscule part of that process… They bring so much magic into my life.  EVERY FAIRY GODDESS MUST MAINTAIN A BUTTERFLY GARDEN. 🙂

THE CATERPILLARS

BEHOLD THE AWESOME ART OF TRANSFORMATION

Here are the culprits of my Collard Greens demise… After Mama Buterfly lays her larvae, the grow into these beautiful caterpillars. They crawl up my fence to the passion fruit vine where they spin into cacoons.

HAWTHORN

I'm not sure if Hawthorn is a Larval or Nectoral plant. But it is on the list of plants that butterflies eat.

HERBS:

SAGE

I've nearly killed my sage due to over watering. Help (:/

CILANTRO

As you see, the chickens are very fond of the Cilantro! Homegrown cilantro smells & tastes so good! MMMMMMM

MINT!

MINT is the Perfect compliment to Berries!

I am a Mint Fanatic! I have 3 different strains:

SPEARMINT

The Spearmint has a real intense aroma and taste...

CHOCOLATE MINT

... and my personal favorite is Chocolate Mint! I can't wait to make some ice cream & cookies! Yummy Stuff Y'all

DILL

I never was the biggest dill fan until I grew some. Now I try to find ANY excuse to use dill.

TREES:

I absolutely adore fruit trees! Even as a little girl. I’ve had many trees before, like peach & persimmon. But @ my current location I have an Avocado &  Fig that are planted in the ground.  My others are container trees which are a challenge that I am glad to take on.

AVOCADO TREE

After all this time I finally got my Avocado Tree to blossom. They cut down to the ground and it grew back with force!

THE FIG TREE

When I first moved to this location, this tree was ignored for years. It was planted for my children's Great Grandmother. Now it has an annual harvest that is very bountiful.

Y’all know I’m a Serious Citrus Addict. So It’s only fitting that I have a couple of Lemon Trees. I put lemon in & on damn near everything LOL. 🙂

LEMON BLOSSOMS

I never took the time before to really trip on how pretty lemon blossoms are.

FUTURE LEMONS 😀

You can see the buds of little lemons growing out of the blossom.

My Pomegranate Trees just came in the mail earlier this week. I’m documenting the process of producing my first fruit step by step. Even though they look like some very tall & expensive twigs, they say that they can live up to 200 years! WoW

SWEET POMEGRANATES

When pomegranates price went up to $5 a pop, I said, "It's time to get some Orchard trees!" So I did. 😀

I told you that they look like expensive twigs!

Preparing the soil & the pots for the pom trees...

The root ball...

THE BERRIES:

LOVE MY BERRIES…. LOVE MY BERRIES! THE DARKER THE BERRY THE SWEETER THE JUICE! ;P

BLUE BERRIES

This is my second attempt to grow berries in pots. It just doesn't get cold enough for the 200-400 chill hours that they require. But I still trying.

I’m still fighting the same problems/challenges as my first attempt at berry cultivation.  Like Leaf Rust, and Leaf Loss, it’s almost like they have had a nervous breakdown or something?

Pretty Pink Berry Blossoms

My Berries are so sweet that they taste like cotton candy! The family love to forage for food in the backyard. 🙂

WILD BERRIES

But my wild berries are now starting to produce in even winter time!

THE VEGGIES:

I’ve managed to get a variety of crops in the ground so that they can get established before the frost really sets in.  My shit is going to be the bomb come spring & summer!

RED ONIONS

Even though they're supposed to bloom in the spring. My red onions have they're own agenda and are beginning to sprout. Of course I need another pot for the extra bulbs.

BRUSSEL SPOUTS

The brussel sprouts are adjusting nicely, they Really love the full sun garden.

EGGPLANT

I can't believe I actually grew an EggPlant! It was so gooood. EggPlant Parmesan and Eggplant creole is now a family favorites!

TOMATOES

The last time that I grew some homegrown tomatoes, I was a little girl living in Lemeirt Park. Nothing compares commercially.

You realize that a tomato is actually a fruit when you grow them yourself.

SWEET ONIONS

There are no words to express the aromatics of sweet onions. You can almost taste the smell of these beauties.

THE CHILI PEPPERS:

SWEET RED CHILI PEPPERS
Sweet & Hot chili peppers! I even roasted some when we BBQed for Thanksgiving! With hickory wood —> They were Totally insanely goooood.
THE FIRE CHILI

These puppies are straight FIYAH FIYAH!

Fire Chilis grow Black and turn red @ maturity. Crazy Hot but tantilizing. Great for sinus pain relief…It burns really bad @ first then has this awesome numbing properties.

THE CARIB CHILI

Pretty tricky to grow. I had to move it inside and place in my window sill for the blooms to survive. I have successfully grown a single fruit. It's supposed to be one of the hottest peppers in the world. Equal to the Habenero pepper! Yikes

Yes I roasted this on the grill with some hickory wood! It so beautifully diabolically scrumtiously dangerous. I can’t wait to use this in my hot sauce!

THE CHICKENS:

An Essential component of maintianing an organic garden. The put in Major work on pest control!

GERTRUDE & HEATHCLIFF ON DUTY!

They Love nothing more than to forgage in mamas compost patch!

My Beagle Rufus gnawing on his bones! SMH

I hope y’all enjoyed the glimpse into my backyard garden.  In my next post I will share my Sidewalk Garden.

XOXOXOXO
